I want to buy a new laptop computer. Models for sale have Vista, I want XP instead. Geek Squad, says no way? Can the hard drive on a new laptop computer be reformatted and the XP operating system installed? Best Buy guys said they tried it without success. Anybody out there do better?

Fixing a laptop computer? my father bought a laptop he got from garage sale for $2 like a compaq presario 1235 laptop and i tried reformat the computer using my windows xp and like when i get to the blue screen where says Windows setup is now loading i think.. it get stuck there and doesnt do anything else.. I searched for the HP "dv7-2180us" and found that laptopsgoingcheap.com is selling them for $620.00 which is about half of the other retailers. The sites appears to have spawned from the UK (which isn't a good sign so far). I won't buy from them without any prior experience or some type of feedback so if you've already been burned, post your response here. Which laptop computer should I buy from Best Buy; Acer-Aspire or Compaq-Presario? I bought this Compaq laptop from Best Buy last week for $399 (originally priced at $599), and now they have an Acer on sale for $399 (originally $499). Should I return the first one to get the other? Cosmetically the Compaq looks better with the touchpad in the middle (vs Acer's being on slightly on the left due to the placement of a number pad on the right which Compaq doesn't have. It seems like typing on your lap would not be as easy because of the slightly more left location of the Acer keyboard despite the number pad being pretty handy). I do not plan to purchase any additional programs or warranties for either computer (they both have one year limited parts and labor). Acer appears to handle more video memory up to 1759MB (Compaq is up to 895MB). Compaq can only expand to 3GB of ram but Acer goes up to 4GB. The Acer speakers say they're: Intel® High Definition (2-channel support) Built-in Acer 3DSonic stereo speakers Compaq has Built-in Altec Lansing. Are the Acer speakers a lot better? Acer comes with a digital media card reader Compaq has a WXGA high-definition widescreen LCD with BrightView technology (1280 x 800). Acer has a WXGA widescreen TFT-LCD with Acer CrystalBrite technology (1366 x 768). Does the Acer monitor compare to or have high def? (The picture is more important to me than the sound). Calling computer experts! Which laptop is the better buy? Sony VAIO or Toshiba Satellite? Hey there. I'm browsing for laptops and I've come across a bit of a wall. Right now Best Buy has two computers on sale, a Toshiba Satellite for $550 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8897633&type=product&id=1212192350239) and a Sony VAIO for $600.(http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8892923&type=product&id=1211587728587) Now, at first brush the Toshiba seems like the better deal- it's $50 less, has 3 GB RAM (compared to the viao's 2 GB), a built-in webcam and mic, the same size screen as the Sony, and 200 GB HD (vs. Sony's 160 GB). Based on that alone, I was tempted to pick up the Satellite, but then I wondered...how can the Toshiba be CHEAPER and have more bang for the buck? My father says it's because Toshiba uses cheaper/less powerful components, and well...he builds computers, so he would know, but I think (in this case) he's being prejudiced. He absolutely LOVES VAIOS, and is pushing me to buy one myself. However, after owning two VAIOs that haven't lasted more than 2 years, and seeing just how expensive they can be, I'm willing to switch. What I'm asking is, is the Toshiba really as good a buy as it seems, or are they giving you these visible extras in an attempt to distract you from the computer's shortcomings? Is Toshiba a reliable, high-quality company? Also, if anyone can explain the more subtle pros and cons of each laptop (for example, is there a huge difference between graphic cards, processor, etc? Can you play "Dragon Age: Origins" on a laptop computer? This is what happened: I bought the game off Amazon because it was on sale, when I got the game I opened and downloaded it; then it tells me I don't have the right kind of video card. I bought a laptop from bestbuy and whenever I went on microsoft word, powerpoint, etc, it always asked me for a product key but I didn't have one so I just ignored it. Now that the 25 times to open the program is over, I can't type or do anything except view files. Has anyone else had this same problem? Do I need to buy the software to be able to go on microsoft word? How do I get my old laptop into good shape for sale on eBay / give away? I have a really old laptop that I want to sell for a couple of bucks (literally) on eBay or just end up giving away to good will. Do Dell laptop computers have a lot of problems? I was about to buy a Dell Studio computer at staples and the sales person advised me against it. He said that they have had 7 Dell notebook PC's returned in the last 40 days and that none of them will boot. He also said that Dell will not take them back. Then he recommended an Acer instead.
