What is the BEST notebook computer I could possibly get for under $1200? Right now I have an Compaq Presario notebook computer, and it's a bit...rickety. I want to save up and splurge for a really nice computer-- Probably at the beginning of next year when all the stuff goes on sale, (and i get my pay raise!) What should I look for? I really don't know much about computers. My boyfriend keeps telling me I should get a Mac. I don't want to skimp out, and I'm willing to spend. I need it for school, and a lot of photo, graphics and art programs i use. Thanks so much!! Sound driver deletes itself when I reboot my computer - help? I recently purchased a Gateway Solo 9500 notebook computer from a sale at a local university. I bought it without an operating system, so I had a good friend and computer expert install one for me. Everything was working great until I realized there was no sound. I used a gateway service to find the correct driver for my system, ESS Allegro, and downloaded it. It worked fine, but I noticed that the driver deletes itself every time I reboot the computer. Why is this happening? Because of the way the university originally bought the computer, Gateway tech support cannot assist me and all my computer-expert friends are totally stumped. I would appreciate your help! How much, roughly, would it cost for me to replace the board if that happens to be the issue?

Where in Tokyo can I get a good English notebook computer? My old computer is more than 5 years old, and it's been acting up a lot lately. I've visited places in Akihabara, such as Laox, to find a new notebook. However, all they had were Sony Vaios that weren't all that powerful. The selection was terrible. Actually, they were having a clearance sale at the time, so it's possible they'll have better stock when they get the new computers in. I do not want a Sony Vaio. I want a notebook PC that is fairly powerful, dedicated graphics (no integrated graphics chipset), and not tiny. And it must have English Windows. Does anyone have an experience searching for notebook PCs in Tokyo that has found a good place? I never said I was looking for a Sony Vaio. Just a little extra info. I can't build a notebook computer. Also, I can't go pick one up in North America. I'm not going there for many months.

Cheap Laptops, yes or no? How do I upgrade my DELL computer, without distribution software, when the upgrade requires it? I have a DELL Inspirion Notebook. It is sold WITHOUT a disk for the installed software. (If you have to recover the software for some reason, you use the computer tools to go to a previous configuration or to go to the original configuration image.) BUT in order to do a Windows XP upgrade for Microsoft WORD, the upgrade says that I must have my WORD distribution CD in the drive. I tried contacting DELL this evening, and not only are they - according to their chat info - unable to chat due to heavy volume, but they only have chat categories for hardware, shipping and sales, NONE for software support, even though I bought the software through them as an OEM. Talk about lousy support! Now - how do I do the Microsoft upgrade without the CD in the drive?

can I legally get my money from a computer manufacturer if? I ordered a notebook on the 12/10/2007. HP shipped the notebook to me on the 12/19/2007. From the problem reports that I get here, the windows program in my computer has been have having problem at the factory since 12/10/2007, which was before I even ordered the notebook it. Do I have the right to get a refund since it seems that the company sold me a computer that was having problem before I made it the purchase it? I sent the computer back to the factory, they sent it to me, they reinstalled all the programs but the computer is still having the same problems. I emailed the company about the problem of the computer, they didn't reply, I called technical support, they couldn't find a solution. So I contacted the sales department and they are telling me that I was supposed to return it 21 days after I made the purchase. But I did not know that a new computer would come up with a bad windows program. I asked them why do they put a computer that has technical issues for sale and as a new computer, they are telling me that they don't have an answer because this is the first time that it happened. I paid more than $1200 for the computer, I paid for warranty but I am disappointed with the product. Can I get my money back on the ground that the computer was having problem at the manufacturer before I ordered it and that even though I sent it back, they returned it with the same problem? My computer is still under warranty. I didn't find out that the problem existed way before I got the computer until last night when I was writing down the dates that the problems have been occurring.They started to happen in early january 2008, but I thought that it was basic technical troubles. When it got worse last summer I decided to send it back when I returned for school.I live abroad during summer. Yesterday, I went to write down all the error reports and in the report, one of the error occurred before I bought it. That's how I found out about that. I knew it had issue, I sent it back to them. They returned it to, they reinstalled the operating system and everything. But the computer is still having the same problem. I am a new graduate MBA, just graduated and this has been my first week at a new job - need advice...? I used my MBA to change careers from HR into Finance, and thought I had a entry level role here. I was hired as a business analyst, and am tasked with utilization and profitability of projects. I was given a notebook computer, and the first 2 days asked my "bosses" what I should do, who to train with, etc. They do not know! I have been meeting with as many PM's as possible, sales, and purchasing to learn the macro-level business. I have no true cube or desk (there is no space) no phone, and zero training. I could literally sit here, get paid, and more than likely nobody would know the difference. What should I do? I want to learn, and was told I would be trained, but now that I am here (they had plenty of time to plan for me) nada...... 1. Is this common? 2. Any advice?

Computer software licenses? Hello everyone, I have a question concerning a license of the Anti-Virus software "Kaspersky". Recently I bought a new notebook and the sales talked me into buying a 3-year license for Kaspersky. On the same day, he activated the license for me and it is working fine. However, I am experiening major problems with this notebook and I am going to exchange it. My question now is: Is it somehow possible to keep using this license (on the new notebook) I have already activated? I know that a license is determined for only one PC, but would it somehow work if Kaspersky had this license removed from my old notebook so that I can continue using the 3-year license on my new notebook? Is it possible to change the operating system on my notebook from Vista to Xp? I bought a Acer Aspire 5570-2609 notebook in june 2007. It came with windows visa but it is not compatable with many programs my husband uses for school. The sales guy at best buy told us we had to buy a new laptop with Xp as the opperating system, that we cannot put Xp on our laptop. After some compatability issues I was forced to do a system recovery and reset to factory settings. When the system initiated it said Windows XP but then went into Vista. On the original box from the computer it says Windows Vista softload. Does this mean that it initially was a XP opperating system but then upgraded before sale? If so,Can I put Xp back on it? Do I need to buy a new laptop with XP as the opperating system? Please share your knowledge with me.

My dad got me a Toshiba Notebook can I actually connected to the Internet, if yes what do I need to do? Sony Vaio or Mac Notebook? I currently own a colored Sony Vaio laptop. I haven't had any problems with it, but I've been hearing that Macs are better so I'm debating on selling my Vaio and purchasing a macbook (especially with their new promotion-- free ipod touch). I've put my laptop up for sale and i've received at least 3 replies and there is one person who's still e-mailing me to purchase it. Then I heard Vaio is better than Mac. But then I also heard Mac is better. Now, I can't decide... I would be using my laptop for mostly school work when I go to college. Gaming isn't a big deal because I also have a desktop computer. So.. what should I do?? the money isn't a huge issue because my vaio was expensive anyway. if i end up selling it, i wouldn't lose any money to trade it for apple. i might actually get more money.

Can you recommend a good laptop/notebook for me (See below)? My current laptop is annoying, for one thing the fan is extremely loud, I've had it for 2 years and it still is very annoying. It also gets very hot, and it's very slow. Sometimes it take 5-7 minutes just to open up a document on my computer. I've decided to start looking for a new and better laptop, but I don't want to get one with known similar problems. I have a laptop for sale, how much is it worth? I recently came into possession of a Sony Vaio GRV550 laptop. The screen size is 16" and has a 30 GB hard drive. Basic programs included including basic virus protection. It also has a wireless notebook adapter model number MN-520. According to the guy who refurbished it for my mom it's worth 200 dollars, but I'm a bit skeptical, due to the fact even though my parent's hired him as their I.T. guy he has been the basis of most of their computer problems around the office. I don't know if he's ripping them off or whatnot I just thought I'd ask around to see if what he was saying was bs. Why do most computer manufacturers sell only computer with Windows Vista installed? It's gotta hurt their sales, considering the majority of users have a much better experience with XP.
