Sound driver deletes itself when I reboot my computer - help?

I recently purchased a Gateway Solo 9500 notebook computer from a sale at a local university. I bought it without an operating system, so I had a good friend and computer expert install one for me. Everything was working great until I realized there was no sound. I used a gateway service to find the correct driver for my system, ESS Allegro, and downloaded it. It worked fine, but I noticed that the driver deletes itself every time I reboot the computer. Why is this happening? Because of the way the university originally bought the computer, Gateway tech support cannot assist me and all my computer-expert friends are totally stumped. I would appreciate your help! How much, roughly, would it cost for me to replace the board if that happens to be the issue?

  1. I had this happen on another Gateway MX6027 notebook. We (the PC repair shop I work at) ended up eventually (after weeks of playing with it) replacing the board to solve the issue. It may be a fault sound card (built into the motherboard). Try contacting the company who makes your sound driver, perhaps they'll have a more updated version of the driver that'll work just in case it isn't a hardware issue.
