How can I connect my desktop and laptop computers to one another?

I want to connect my desktop and laptop computers so I can transfer files between them. Is there a simple way to do this? Edit: Both computers are on the internet, the desktop via a hub (connect to a seperate computer - not one of mine) and the laptop via wireless internet. I think it's be easiest to transfer files with a p2p program; I currently use SoulSeek - is there a (free) one that's better?

1. Yez there is. From the source, you buy a Nextech data transfer cable. Problem solved
2. Well, if you access internet from your both PC's, and you have a router, you can share both computer's and transfer files... Let me know if you have a router connected on the main machine, and I'll type down directions for you in next post.
